Inside Out

"Secular music has no place in church."

Ever heard somebody say that? I think it means that there's two types of music: "religious" music and non-church "sinful" music, so therefore only "religious" music belongs in church.

I think it also means that it must be OK to listen to non-church music outside of church, because non-church music belongs outside of church. Otherwise, the only music believers would ever listen to is "church" music.

Rules sure make faith easier, don't they? And rules hardly ever contradict each other, either.

Unless there's more than one.

"Church" isn't a building, it's not a memory of "the good old days" nor is it an adjective describing one hour of the week on Sunday mornings. The church is Christ's body ... and I don't see how we, as believers, can start drawing lines or making distinctions about when we're In Church or Out of Church.

Or how we can offer a straight-faced argument that something can be perfectly OK and acceptable in our lives for 167 hours of the week ... except for the one hour between 11AM and noon on Sundays we reverently set aside for "church" ... when it's time to lower our heads and put on the religious face.

Which goes so well with our organ preludes, hymnals and Sunday Best coats n' ties.
